The moment of truth arrived as we carefully peeled away the old structure, revealing the 1890 historic building in all its untouched glory. It was a painstaking process that demanded precision and care, but the result was nothing short of breathtaking – the original building stood tall, unscathed and proud, its intricate details and character still intact. A true preservation success story!

Standing before the historic building, it's hard not to feel a sense of reverence for the craftsmanship of the past. The original crew of 7 from 1890 would be beaming with pride to see their handiwork preserved in such remarkable condition, a testament to their skill and dedication. We're honored to have played a part in safeguarding this piece of history for generations to come.

We were challenged to reface a bridge abutment while leaving the original rebar intact. It turned out to be more cost effective to remove the old rebar altogether and cut through the concrete to the oldest existing layer and install new rebar and concrete.

Rebar being installed after 99% of concrete removal was accomplished with machinery, a few sections had to be hand chiseled.

The challenge on this project was to manufacture concrete forms of a constant radius in a short time efficiently. This was accomplished by CAD design and working with a kitchen cabinet shop to finish the raw parts.

In the northern winter the challenges are much greater than can be imagined in an engineering office. The ice in the picture exceeds 10 inches. It took the imagination and experience of the excavator operator to break the ice and literally "row up the river" by breaking the ice and moving it aside while still propelling forward with the cofferdam in tow.

The cofferdam installation was equally challenging as there were electrical wires and other obstructions preventing the use of a mobile crane. Instead we used a custom built I beam section to hoist the cofferdam over the center pier. The cofferdam used a special foam seal to seal against the water intrusion at a depth of 6 feet.

Project included removal of superstructure, refacing of concrete abutments, construction of new superstructure, reconstruction of roadway, guardrails and paving.
